Am I Too Old to Start Karate?

Well, we could come out with the same excuses; “I am too old”, “it’s too late”, “I am out of shape” and “it’s always a bad time!”.

Now I am just talking to you, about my experiences – but I have been practicing martial arts since I was a teenager.  My body is accustomed to the movements and exercises during a normal class, but for a beginner, the first few classes may be a bit more challenging!  As the saying goes, “I am not as young as I used to be” – but staying at home and watching television will not help your health or slow the aging process.  Not exercising and not eating the proper food makes life hard – but exercising and eating the right foods is also hard!  You just need to find out which hard is best for you!

Here are the pros and the cons are participating in a martial arts program.

The Pros:  The art of Karate will help you with your cardiovascular system, you will have stronger muscles, you will benefit from weight loss; or for some people, proper weight gain.  It will help you boost your immune system, and it will do wonders for your mental health – which is just as important as your physical health!   There is also the social aspect of practicing in a group and, of course, the discipline that comes with practicing a martial art! Also, on a side note, having a treat on a Friday night will not make you feel as guilty!

The Cons.  You don’t sit on the couch eating junk food – but your physical, mental and spiritual health will not benefit from doing that either. Sitting at home during the week will prevent you from meeting new people, and having different experiences. Now Friday nights are just every other night.  How fun is that?  Also, the lack of discipline from not taking care of yourself could lead to other problems – physical and mental! I know there was supposed to be a list of cons, but I just can’t think of any!

Now the question is, am I too old to start karate? Well, that depends what you want out of life!

We only have one life to live – and in my opinion. to live this life, you must have to live it to the fullest. There are plenty of wonderful experiences to have in this life and what you must learn to look for tis hose experiences. Every Journey starts with one step.  The question is, are you taking one step forward, or one step back?
